English Books' Copyright

Reading a book online, and just found the below lines.

[...]It is fully protected under the copyrights laws of the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and all British Commonwealth countries, [...]

How does this mean, what I want to know about copyright? Does this mean anything to me? Or does it mean to anyone around me?
